In World War II, officers of The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders wore a black glengarry, which was a distinctive feature setting them apart from other Highland regiments. While most Scottish regiments sported diced bands (a pattern of colored squares) on their glengarries, the Camerons, along with The Black Watch, wore plain glengarries without the dicing. The Cameron's glengarry was further distinguished by a black silk square extending from the top of the cap to its base, a feature not present elsewhere and not worn by other ranks.
